What your DJ handles
Discuss music for the parts of the day you are booking: ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and reception dancing. Confirm which sound systems, microphones and lighting are included, and which are additional options. A ceremony in a different space can involve a separate setup.
Your DJ also needs your special songs, preferred versions, do-not-play list and approach to guest requests.
What your MC handles
An MC can introduce the wedding party, welcome guests, invite speakers up for toasts and announce the first dance or other key moments. Provide the order of events and names with pronunciation notes. Tell your MC whether you prefer a lively delivery, a relaxed tone or something more reserved.
Agree on which announcements you want. You do not need constant microphone use to keep the reception informed.
Do you need both roles?
If your reception includes introductions, toasts and planned dances, decide who will guide those moments. That may be your DJ/MC, another host or someone you choose. Avoid leaving the role unassigned until the reception begins.
If a friend is hosting, confirm who will hand over microphones, cue the music and communicate any timeline changes. A shared plan makes the handoffs easier.
Coordinate with the rest of the team
Your MC is one part of the event team. Decide who is managing the overall timeline and who can approve changes. Before announcing an important moment, make sure the people involved are ready and your photographer has time to get into position.
